Lightyear is isolated from the Toy Story universewith Buzz Lightyear's toy character and his friend and colleague Alisha getting stranded on an alien planet. Ethan Claide is the first protagonist in a Disney movie who is also gay.

While Disney wasn't on board with portraying Alisha and Kiki's kiss, Pixar insisted. The moment is also beautiful, portraying a lesbian couple with their little son. Often, boys have the pressure to follow in their father's footsteps, including certain cultural expectations of masculinity.

In the same way, it's satisfying to see Ethan get a happy ending with the boy of his dreams.

In other cases, viewers have criticized the studio for coding its villains as being gay, conflating gayness with evil, or going so over the top as to be insultingly stereotypical, pigeonholing an entire community. While Ethan rejects his father's farming career, the two manage to reach a negotiation.
